We honor Reston Interfaith
"I hope that while so many people are out smelling the flowers, someone is taking the time to plant some." - H. Rappaport
The good folks at Reston Interfaith (RI) have been gently tending to families who need a helping hand in Northern Virginia since 1970. More affordable housing has always been the goal.
In one of the richest counties in the U.S., 2000 people are homeless each night. Many hardworking people are living in cars because their homes went into foreclosure or their rents shot sky-high. Owning a home is just a dream.
"Folks are on the edge," said Chris Hyland, Major Gifts Officer. They can't stretch their paychecks to pay for food, gas and other necessities for themselves and their children.
The organization was founded in the Reston-Herndon region by various area religious groups to help their neighbors who needed a helping hand. RI operates many programs including a homeless shelter and a food pantry and offers emergency services to help families blossom again.
The organization also currently owns and rents 37 town homes to families at prices they can afford. “RI’s goal is 40 homes by our fortieth anniversary in 2011,” explained Hyland.
Would you like to help? When you're shopping for groceries, buy a pack of nutritious breakfast or energy bars (Quaker, Kelloggs or similar) and send it to the Reston Interfaith Food Pantry. They would also appreciate baby supplies: diapers, wipes, bottles and pacifiers.
